ALMA SMITH

     ALMA FERN SMITH, daughter of Albertus Blaine and Sarilda Pearle (Price) Shepard, was born December 29, 1919 at Earlton, Kansas.  She departed this life early Friday, March 19, 2010 at the Seiling Nursing Center.  She was 90 years of age.

      She graduated from high school in Thayer, Kansas with the class of 1938.  She began working for Boeing Aircraft in Wichita, Kansas.  It was during this time she met Quentin Manford Smith and they married October 2, 1943 in Guthrie, Oklahoma.  On October 6, 1943, Quentin entered the United States Army and served his country during WWII.  He was later stationed in California and Alma moved to California to be with him.  She began working as a secretary for the California State Water Resources Board in Sacramento.  They later moved to Eldorado, CA where Quentin worked as a carpenter until he retired in the early 1980’s.  In 1982, they moved to Seiling where they were faithful members of the First Baptist Church.  Due to failing health, they moved to the Seiling Nursing Center in December 2005.  Quentin preceded her in death June 6, 2007.

      She is survived by one sister: Ruby Hedges and husband George of Chanute, KS; one brother: Harold Shepard of Tempe, AZ; one sister-in-law: Viola Ward and husband Kenneth of Waxahachie, TX besides several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She is also survived by her close friend: Debbie Taylor of Seiling.  Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one sister: Eva Gossett and two brothers: Virgil and Claude Shepard. 

      The funeral service was held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, March 22, 2010 in the family chapel at the Redinger Funeral Home with Pat Dougherty, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating.  Private burial was in the Brumfield Cemetery.
