DR. PORTER B.
LESLIE
Dr. Porter Bass Leslie, M.D. was born in Ft.
Wayne, Indiana November 16, 1943 the son of John Bass Leslie, Sr.
and Elizabeth Ann (Porter) Leslie. He died early Wednesday, June 29,
2011 at Woodward Regional Hospital at the age of 67 years. He
attended public schools there graduating from high school in 1962.
He entered Purdue University, attending the Ft. Wayne extension with
the double majors of Biology and English. He graduated from Purdue
University and worked with his father in the garden center until he
was accepted into medical school in Guadalajara, Mexico in 1969. He
completed his studies, internship and residency in Family Practice
there.
While in medical school, he married Kay Basting, July 19, 1969. To
this union, two daughters were born, Mary Frances and Linda Kay.
Porter passed his Oklahoma Medical Boards and was recruited by
Oklahoma Physician Manpower. He accepted the position in Seiling,
Oklahoma in 1975. Numerous times he had been heard to say when they
came over DeLong hill the first time and saw the lights of Seiling,
he knew he was coming home.
Beloved by most of northwest Oklahoma, Porter was involved in
getting EMT's certified, enjoyed search and rescue work and enjoyed
horses, trail rides with the South Canadian River Riders and the
Seiling Roundup Club. He was greatly involved with the Great Western
Cattle Drive Trail of Dreams and later the Great Western Trail
Drive. The stories will forever be told of his accomplishments and
escapades.
He was known for being a 24/7 doctor, he was honored by his
community with his nomination and subsequent placing as first
runner-up in the National Country Doctor Award in 2004. He received
a lab coat which, of course, he never wore. The community purchased
with mass personal donations, an antique Doctor's Buggy which will
become part of his perpetual memorial. Due to declining health and
the death of his black Arabian Shadow, Porter was never able to
drive the buggy.
All who knew Porter could identify with something about him. He
enjoyed music...country, classical and hymns (having been trained as
a church organist), mechanics (how many medical doctors have grease
under their fingernails, know how to bale hay or are willing to
practice medicine on animals?) There were so many aspects of his
life. He was generous to a fault, non-discriminatory in his life and
practice, enjoyed good food, good friends and good times.
Porter was preceded in death by his parents and his half brother,
John Bass Leslie II. Besides his wife, daughters, son-in-law and
grandsons all of Indiana, he leaves a half sister, Alison Reiff and
a multitude of friends, associates, devoted patients and many
memories.
He requested cremation with inurnment of his remains to be placed in
the Bass Family Mausoleum at Lindenwood Cemetery, Ft. Wayne,
Indiana.
