GERALD WHETSTONE
GERALD DEAN WHETSTONE, son of Clifford Osborn and Ruby Bell (Warner)
Whetstone, was born May 9, 1942 in Major County, Oklahoma in the
Apple Grove Community. He departed this life on Monday,
October 24, 2011 at his home in Seiling at the age of 69 years.
Gerald
began his elementary school years at Longdale and graduated from
Seiling High School with the class of 1960. He married LaVeta
Coleene Cook and they made their home in Seiling where they raised
their three children: Michelle, Wayde and Angie. He owned and
operated the Seiling Locker and the Dairy King for many years.
Later, he owned Indian Joe's Jerky business and he also farmed.
He was united in marriage to Susan Beth (Hoots) Pembrook, December
15, 1984 at Canton. They made their home in Seiling where
Gerald became the Administrator for the City of Seiling, a position
he held for many years. He was active in community affairs in
Seiling and served as a city councilman, as well as, Seiling's
mayor, he worked with Physicians Manpower to recruit Dr. Porter
Leslie to move to Seiling and re-open the Seiling Municipal
Hospital. He served on the hospital board and was active in
organizing the emergency medical service. Gerald worked diligently
raising funds and making improvements, as well as, landscaping at
the Seiling Nursing Center. He was proud to have been
selected parade marshal by the Seiling Roundup Club and was active
in the planning of the Seiling Centennial Celebration in 1999.
He was a member of the Seiling Lions Club, as well as, the First
Baptist Church. He liked to fish and work in his garden but
his greatest enjoyment besides his family was raising, breeding and
racing Thoroughbred horses.
He
is survived by his wife, Susan Whetstone, two daughters: Michelle
Sander and husband Kirk of Seiling, Angie Garcia and husband DeeRay
of Eufaula, two sons: Wayde Whetstone of Oklahoma City and Chris
Pembrook of Enid; ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren; two
sisters: LaDema Congdon of Brea, CA and Linda Motley of Ponca City.
He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, many other relatives
and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and one
brother, Clifford Jr. "Buddy" Whetstone.
The
funeral service was held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 28, 2011 at
the Elm Grove Community Church with Pastors Orville White and Dennis
Adair, officiating. Interment followed in the Orion
Cemetery. Memorials can be made to the Gerald Whetstone
Memorial Fund with the Redinger Funeral Home-PO Box 236-Seiling, OK
73663 serving as custodian of the funds.
