MERVIN CHAPMAN

 

    MERVIN EDWARD CHAPMAN, one of numerous great grandchildren in the lineage of Amos Chapman, was born July 7, 1947 at Concho, OK.  He was the second of three sons born to Lee and Onia (Harms) Chapman.  He went home to heaven on February 12, 2010 at the Seiling Municipal Hospital.  He was 62 years of age.

      He was affectionately known to his family and friends as “Mert”.  He received his first eight years of education at the Chester School and graduated from Seiling High School with the class of 1965.  He enlisted into the United States Air Force in 1966 and received his honorable discharge in 1972.  Mert graduated from Spartan School of Aeronautics and he worked on aircraft in Oklahoma City.  He worked as a welder several years for Waldon, Inc. in Fairview and later moved to Chester where he began working at Haldaman Tractor & Auto Repair.  He was united in marriage to Leslee Ann Haldaman February 6, 1976 at Woodward.  They have made their home in Chester since.  In 1977, Mert began working for Panhandle Eastern Pipeline Company in Seiling.  He retired from the company in 2003 after twenty five years of service. 

      Mert loved God, his family and was a loyal friend to many.  He enjoyed farming, his cattle, cutting wood and his hobby of metal detecting.  He was a member of the Elm Grove Church where he was a faithful commander of the Royal Rangers youth.  Later, he helped with Kids Church at the Mutual Christian Church.  Mert was actively involved in the activities of the Chester Community and enjoyed helping in any capacity he could.

      He is survived by his wife Leslee Chapman of Chester; one daughter: Lacey Hall and husband Ryan of Chester; one son: Matt Chapman and wife Shannon of Taloga; three granddaughters: Bethanie Rinker, Breckin Watson and Layla Chapman; two brothers: Jim Chapman of Woodward and Dean Chapman and wife Liz of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan-Canada.  He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents. 

      The funeral service was held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 17, 2010 at the Elm Grove Community Church with Pastor Orville White, officiating.  Interment with military honors followed in the Chester Cemetery. Memorials can be made to the Elm Grove Church Powerhouse Kids Ministry with the Redinger Funeral Home-PO Box 236-Seiling, OK 73663 serving as custodian of the funds.
